Breast Cancer Rehabilitation, what the future is looking like….

Breast Cancer Rehabilitation, what the future is looking like….

Integrating breast cancer rehabilitation from the get-go into normal standard of care is the future. Can you
imagine preparing for your recovery even before you have started cancer treatment? Well this is what breast cancer survivors have been asking for and an international roundtable of rehabilitation experts agree with.

The evidence clearly shows that women and men benefit from rehabilitation, advice and education on the
common side-effects of their breast cancer treatment. Well educated patients combined with rehab
screening for early detection and treatment reduces the incidence and burden of these treatment
side-effects and as such is welcome news indeed.

This model of care is called the Prospective Surveillance Model or PSM. Research on this model is ongoing
including cost/benefits, risks, barriers, implementation strategies and opportunities for dissemination. In the
US the PSM is being integrated into emerging cancer centre accreditation processes and standards of
care. I will be blogging on how this is going and upcoming trainings on it and any other breast cancer rehab
news …..so please stay tuned!
