Course: ‘Strong Pink Women’. Breast Cancer Rehabilitation Course for Physiotherapists.

Date: June 13th & 14th 2019
Venue: UCD, Health Science Building, Rm: A213

Course Description: Research and innovation in oncology continue to contribute to significant declines in breast-cancer related deaths and to a growing population of long-term breast cancer survivors. The physical side-effects of breast cancer treatment may include weeks and months of shoulder pain and stiffness, lymphoedema, fatigue, difficulties with activities of daily living and quality of life. Evidence shows that early breast cancer rehabilitation and daily exercise reduces the risk of chronic impairments, secondary lymphoedema, other late effects and even cancer recurrence.

In this two-day course we focus on early breast cancer rehabilitation to achieve full, pain-free range of shoulder motion, strength and fitness. Topics include:

  • Manual therapy techniques for adherent scars, cording and radiation fibrosis
  • Exercises for upper quadrant weakness.
  • Essential patient self-care.
  • Early lymphoedema and early compression therapy.
  • Evidenced based exercise programs including: Progressive walking to meet PA guidelines, The Pink Ribbon program and a “Yoga protocol for breast cancer related lymphoedema”.

Teaching methods: Lectures and practical sessions.
